Choosing lab-grown diamond jewelry means looking beyond a single letter or clarity grade. Use this guide to understand the colour and clarity terms on a product page, then compare the actual stone, its measurements and the report supplied with your selected piece.
What does diamond colour mean?
For diamonds assessed on a D-to-Z scale, the grade describes the degree of colour rather than sparkle. D–F is colourless; G–J is near colourless; K–M shows faint colour; N–R very light colour; and S–Z light colour. Fancy-colour diamonds use a different assessment. These categories are explained in GIA’s diamond quality guide.
A screen is not a grading environment. Compare stones in consistent lighting and ask for additional images if a warm or cool appearance matters to you. Keep the intended metal colour in the comparison rather than judging isolated photographs.
A lab-grown diamond clarity chart, in plain language
Clarity describes internal and surface characteristics. IGI assesses clarity at 10× magnification; the size, position and nature of those characteristics matter alongside their number.
- FL / IF: Flawless / Internally Flawless.
- VVS1 / VVS2: Very, Very Slightly Included.
- VS1 / VS2: Very Slightly Included.
- SI1 / SI2: Slightly Included.
- I1 / I2 / I3: Included.
The grade does not promise how a particular stone will look to your unaided eye. Ask to see the actual diamond at normal viewing distance as well as under magnification. Read more about the assessment in IGI’s laboratory-grown diamond report guide.
Colour and clarity do different jobs
A D colour grade does not mean flawless clarity, and VVS clarity does not describe colour. Neither substitutes for evaluating cut and appearance. Start with the shape and dimensions you want, compare colour and clarity together, then review the stone’s finish and light performance.
For earrings, compare both stones as a pair. Check whether the stated weight is per stone or total carat weight (CTW). Our lab-grown diamond stud earrings collection explains this distinction and brings round and oval designs together.
Check which laboratory issued the report
Report formats differ. IGI provides individual colour and clarity grades on its laboratory-grown diamond reports. GIA’s current quality assessment for eligible colourless to near-colourless laboratory-grown diamonds uses an overall Premium or Standard classification. Do not assume every laboratory or report date uses identical terminology. See GIA’s current laboratory-grown services.
Before you choose a pair
- Confirm the stone shape, measurements and weight per earring.
- Read colour and clarity separately.
- Review images of the actual stones where available.
- Check whether individual grading reports are included for the selected design and size.
For example, our 4 CTW oval diamond studs list approximately 2 ct per stone and two individual IGI reports. Report inclusion varies across the collection; do not apply that specification to every pair.
Is there one best colour and clarity combination?
There is no single combination for every buyer. Compare the appearance you prefer, the available design and your budget. A higher grade should answer a preference you can explain, rather than replace looking carefully at the jewelry.
