How to Choose Lab-Grown Diamond Stud Earrings: 4 Key Checks

Lab-grown diamond stud guide listing weight, growth method, setting details and reports

Lab-grown diamond studs look simple: one stone, one setting, worn every day. That simplicity is exactly why the details matter more, not less — there is nowhere for a shortcut to hide. Before choosing a pair, there are four things worth checking beyond how much a photo sparkles.

  • Weight & size — carat is a measure of weight, not diameter
  • Growth method — CVD and HPHT are production methods, not grades
  • Setting details — what holds the stone matters as much as the stone
  • Independent reports — one diamond, one report

01. Weight & Size: Carat Is Weight, Not Diameter

Educational illustration explaining carat weight versus diameter with two 0.5 ct studs

Carat measures a diamond's weight, not how large it looks on the ear. Two stones of the same carat weight can appear different sizes depending on how they're cut — a shallow cut spreads more surface area for its weight, while a deeper cut concentrates it.

On DHARIN's Classic Studs, a 1 ct total weight pair means 0.5 ct per ear, each stone measuring 5.2mm across. The 0.5 ct total weight pair is 0.25 ct per ear, each stone 3.65mm, and the 2 ct total weight pair is 1 ct per ear. Ask for the millimeter measurement of any stud you're considering, not just the carat figure, and compare that number directly rather than judging from an enlarged product photo — close-up images make every stone look larger than it wears.

02. Growth Method: CVD or HPHT — a Method, Not a Grade

Lab-grown diamonds are produced by one of two methods. CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) grows a diamond from a carbon-containing gas, building up crystal layer by layer. HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature) grows a diamond under the same conditions of pressure and heat that form diamonds naturally, compressed into a much shorter timeframe.

Both methods produce lab-grown diamonds — the initials describe how the stone was grown, not how good it is. A CVD-grown diamond may also receive HPHT treatment after growth, as a separate step used to improve its color. DHARIN's diamonds are CVD-grown; judge any stone on its own grading report rather than on which two letters appear next to it.

03. Setting Details: Look Beyond the Sparkle

The front of a stud is the easiest part to get right. Before choosing a pair, look at what you can't immediately see: the setting, the post, and the fastening. A well-made prong setting holds the stone securely without hiding too much of it; the post and back should sit comfortably and stay put through a full day of wear.

On DHARIN Classic Studs, the brand name is engraved into the back of the setting — a detail that stays out of sight once worn. It doesn't change how the earring looks from the front. It's simply there, made with the same care as everything visible.

04. Independent Reports: One Diamond, One Report

A listing that says "certified" isn't the same as a diamond that comes with an independent grading report. The distinction matters: a report from a gemological laboratory such as IGI documents a stone's carat weight, color, clarity, and cut as assessed by a third party — not estimated by the seller, not rounded up, not assumed from a photo.

For a pair of studs, that means two stones and two separate reports, not one shared certificate for the set. On DHARIN's Classic Studs, the 1 ct and 2 ct total weight pairs include two individual IGI reports, one for each diamond. The 0.5 ct total weight pair does not include an IGI report. Before buying, ask whether every stone in a pair comes with its own report — and what that report actually documents. For more on how to read a diamond grading report field by field, see our guide to IGI certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a CVD-grown diamond lower quality than an HPHT-grown one?
No. Growth method doesn't determine quality. A diamond's grade comes from its independently assessed carat, color, clarity, and cut — not from which method produced it.

Why do two studs with the same carat weight look different sizes?
Because carat measures weight, not diameter. Cut proportions determine how that weight is distributed, which is why comparing millimeter measurements is more reliable than comparing carat alone.

Does each earring in a DHARIN pair come with its own grading report?
For the 1 ct and 2 ct total weight pairs, yes — each diamond is graded and documented individually by IGI, not under one shared report for the set. The 0.5 ct total weight pair does not include an IGI report.

DHARIN's Classic Studs are available in 0.5 ct, 1 ct and 2 ct total weight, in S925 sterling silver, 14K yellow gold and 14K white gold. See the full range here.
