Can A Jeweller Tell If A Diamond Is Lab-Grown?

The short answer is no — not by eye.

A trained gemologist examining a lab-grown diamond and a mined diamond side by side cannot distinguish one from the other through visual inspection alone. The stones are optically identical. The difference in origin leaves no visible trace.

Why Can't A Jeweller Tell By Looking?

A diamond is carbon — specifically, carbon atoms arranged in a cubic crystal lattice, a structure so stable it registers Mohs 10, the highest point on the hardness scale.

A lab-grown diamond forms through the same atomic process, layer by layer, under controlled conditions that replicate the pressure and temperature of geological formation. The resulting crystal structure is chemically and physically identical to that of a mined stone.

The atom does not record its origin. It knows only its arrangement.

What Equipment Is Required?

To determine whether a diamond is lab-grown or mined, a gemologist requires specialised instruments:

  • Photoluminescence spectroscopy — detects trace element signatures and growth patterns specific to lab-grown formation
  • UV fluorescence analysis — lab-grown diamonds may display characteristic fluorescence patterns not typical of mined stones
  • Short-wave UV transmission — used to identify nitrogen distribution, which differs between natural and lab-grown stones
  • DiamondView imaging — a De Beers-developed instrument that reveals growth structure under intense UV light

These are not tools available in a standard jewellery setting. Detection requires laboratory-grade equipment and trained analysis.

Does IGI Apply The Same Grading Standard?

Yes. The International Gemological Institute grades lab-grown and mined diamonds by identical criteria: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. The grading report issued for a lab-grown stone uses the same language, the same scale, and the same assessment methodology as one issued for a mined stone.

Every DHARIN diamond of 0.5ct and above is individually IGI-certified. Smaller stones are verified to the same accredited laboratory standard.

Does The Origin Matter?

That depends entirely on what you are purchasing for.

If the question is structural — hardness, brilliance, durability, the way a stone holds light — origin is irrelevant. The properties are identical.

If the question is philosophical — the weight of geological time, the specificity of a stone formed over millions of years — then origin carries meaning that cannot be replicated in a laboratory, and a mined diamond may hold that significance for you.

If the question is financial — the same carat weight and grading at a substantially lower price point — a lab-grown stone represents a different value proposition.

None of these answers is more correct than another. They reflect different priorities.
